Penny Mordaunt

Penny Mordaunt is a British politician who currently serves as the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth North constituency since 2010. She was appointed as the UK's Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office on September 15, 2021, as part of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's cabinet reshuffle.

Mordaunt's political career began in 2006 when she was elected as a councillor for the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. She later served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England from 2009 until 2014, when she was elected as the MP for Portsmouth North.

During her time in parliament, Mordaunt has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Disabled People, Work and Health, and Minister of State for Armed Forces. She also served as Secretary of State for International Development from 2019 to 2020.

Mordaunt is known for her work on issues related to national security, defense, and veterans' welfare. She has been a vocal advocate for improved support for military personnel and their families, and has campaigned for better mental health services for veterans.

Outside of politics, Mordaunt has had a varied career. She served in the Royal Navy Reserves for nine years, and also worked as a magician's assistant and as a communications consultant. She is known for her interest in adventure sports and has participated in various expeditions and challenges to raise money for charity.

Mordaunt was appointed as the first woman to hold the position of "First Sea Lord's Aide-de-Camp," a ceremonial role traditionally reserved for senior male members of the Royal Navy. In this role, she would be responsible for carrying the Sword of State, one of the key symbols of the monarch's power, during the coronation ceremony.

The appointment of Mordaunt to this role was seen as a significant step towards modernizing the traditional roles and customs associated with the monarchy. Mordaunt herself said that she was "proud and honored" to have been chosen for the role, and that she hoped it would inspire more women to consider careers in the armed forces.
